Sunday Best: Ceil Chapman 1940s Wedding Dress

6 Mar

I’m always a little hesitant when it comes to vintage wedding dresses – there are some amazing finds out there, but they are often too fragile, too damaged or too stained to wear. Add to this the historical ultra-petite sizing, and it can be a challenge to find the perfect vintage wedding dress. This one, however, seems like too good an opportunity to pass up.

Ceil Chapman was Marilyn Monroe’s favourite designer, and her iconic dresses were much sought after in the 1950s. This dress appears to have been made early on in her career, and has a classic 1940s silhouette, with a gorgeous metallic trim – who knew bling was big in the Forties?

As with all vintage dresses, please check the measurements carefully – this appears to be a size UK 8. Also bear in mind that all auction purchases made outside the EU are liable to import taxes (VAT plus a fixed customs fee) and that shipping can also be expensive – this dress costs a reasonable $18 (£11) to ship.

Priced at $250 (£150) with no bids, and one day left to go, I’d say this is worth a punt if you’re thinking of a Forties-themed wedding. Does it appeal to you?
