World of Wedding Crazy: Rent Liechteinstein

16 Apr

Yes, that’s Liechtenstein the country. For $70,000 the country is yours for a night. Check in at the palace, receive the ceremonial key to the city, get hitched and spend the night in a glass marquee under the stars.

The company marketing the principality, Airbnb,  can arrange as little or as much Liechtenstein-ness as you’d like, from a tasteful torchlight hike through the mountains to having your own currency printed and street signs changed – all for the right price, of course.

As a renter of Liechtenstein you cannot evict it’s 33,000 residents, but you do get accommodation for 150 people. Airbnb haven’t yet hired out the country for a wedding yet – apparently the last couple who came close to signing on the dotted line called off the wedding. We’re very sure this wasn’t down to an argument about the venue not being big enough…

Inspiration Aisle: Balloons

25 Mar

I love balloons. I mean, I really, really love them. Maybe I’m just a big kid at heart, but is there any experience more carefree than holding a big bunch of helium-filled, bobbing balloons? Want to see proof of my obsession?  This is Mr Love Illustrated and me on our pre-wedding photo shoot.

And this is us on our wedding day.

And if you haven’t quite understood my love of 3-foot wide,  gas-stuffed spheres of latex yet, well….

Yep, that’s me. At the zoo. With balloons. You get the general idea.

When I was organising the wedding, I became fixated with the idea of using lots balloons to decorate our venue. The small ones are very pretty in their own little way:

but I was talking giant. Humongous. Mahusive.

I promise you, these are giant balloons, not tiny people.

Still prefer mine, though. In case you want to engage in some soft of helium one-upmanship, how about taking a leaf out of Gustafson Porter‘s book, and construct a floating balloon canopy for your wedding. The architectural practice created this stunner for the Venice Biennale.

How hard could it be, right?!

Inspiration Aisle: Parasols

25 Feb

I stumbled across this amazingly stylish circus-themed wedding on 100 Layer Cake last week,  and loved the use of parasols to decorate the dance floor.

The rest of the Brent and Erin’s wedding was just as stunning: you can find a full report on stylist JL Designs blog.

Although lighting up the dance floor this way is truly spectacular:

Parasols also look amazing illuminating a walkway:

Or how about adding a splash of colour to a grand entrance porch?

Even just brightening up a cosy table for two:

Best of all, they’re a relatively low-cost way to add the wow-factor – find them online in a variety of colours from £4- £6. I’m thinking white parasols and fairy lights cascading from a high ceiling in a stately home. Somebody please do it – and send me the photos!
